Ugo Rondinone's artistic endeavor to pursue spiritual contemplation through nature reaches a new pinnacle in his Nuns and Monks series.
Exhibited at the Nam June Paik Hall in Museum SAN (Oak Valley, South Korea), the 4-meter-tall "yellow red monk" greets the audience with the solemnity of a medieval saint under the natural light descending from the ceiling.
Although cast in bronze, this monumental work is based on a small-scale limestone model. Stone is a recurring material and symbol in Rondinone's work—an attempt to explore and appreciate natural stone as an object of beauty and contemplation.
This provides viewers with a highly personal and meditative visual experience where the boundary between the outer and inner worlds collapses, offering a sensory journey completely immersed in pure color, form, and scale, as well as a contemporary sense of the sublime.
